BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA TROOP 175
[Sponsored by Second Presbyterian Church]

Serves as Institution representative. Coordinating support for the church sponsored troop. Attends scouting activities as required. Serves as a member of the Board of Review for scout advancement and represents the church for the annual charter renewal. Coordinates the scouts for Scout Sunday and the reception following worship service.

The official birthday for the Boy Scouts of America is February 8, 1910. Some 91 years ago the Boy Scout movement was a huge success in the United States and within a few months after it was incorporated there were over 5,000 troops and over 60 million young men have been involved in the program since it's beginning. I'm sure its success has reached far beyond the dreams of its founder. Our Troop 175 also has a long successful history. The troop was started in 1957 and with the prayers and financial support of Second Presbyterian Church and the early leadership of Scoutmaster Al Ramsey, Dr. Robert Vaughan, Mac Squires, Morris Gates, Berk Laffoon, The McIlwaine Family, and the list goes on and on with others in the church that helped the troop grow quickly, from less than a dozen boys to over 130 boys in the mid 1960's. The troop used to meet at the church building, until it got to big and was moved to the old Ferndale chapel in 1966, where it still meets today.

During the 1960's and early 1970's, #175 was the largest troop in the district and over the past 44 years has produced a record 79 Eagle Scouts, the most of any troop in the council.

Prior to the sale of the McIlwaine Farm and Camp Sysonby, the summer camp program of Troop 175 was known all over the State of Virginia, where several other Boy Scout troops from many parts of the state joined in the fun each summer for boating, Swimming, Archery, Canoeing and many other wonderful times. The scouting program, sponsored by this church, has touched over 1,000 boys lives. We can clearly say that this program has served our community well and we should be very proud.
